Kimjongilia is an adventure that shows a peek at an untold story. Victor Fox is a writer, and one day he politely accepts a manuscript from an elderly Korean man. The manuscript, despite his initial reservations, turns out to be a gripping story of a romance long ago and far away.

The story begins with Peter Chang, a hotblooded youth. After a heated argument with his girlfriend leads to the downfall of his family, he finds himself homeless and directionless. A man offers him a job, and soon Chang is working as a soldier. He earns a reputation as a fierce soldier, and although he is not afforded a lot of respect he is offered a position as a bodyguard for the CPCs spy. As Chang works to improve his ranking and the CPC attempts to strengthen their foothold in Korea, there might also be romance blooming between Chang and the woman he is supposed to protect from her own husband.

The story got me interested right off the bat. The lead character definitely has his flaws, and it was interested to see how he changed over the course of the story. There is also the mystery of whether the old man wrote this story from his history or his imagination.
While other stories might focus on the major players, the main characters are the tools of the bigwigs. You see more of what happens behind the scenes. Media often tend to treat the going-ons of Korea as a curiosity at best and a joke at worst, but there are indeed many heartfelt stories left unexplored in that land. My only warning would be for sexual content, which may bother some.

Kimjongilia A True Story Victor Fox 9781512272031 Books Reviews

A good storyline with well developed characters and some plot twists. Some of the Korean names are similar, making it not as easy to follow the characters at times. It claims to be a true story, but is incredulous at times. If it were really based on true events, it would be extraordinary. Of course the writer used his creative license to move the story along. The ending is not as satisfying as it could be, because one never finds out the eventual fate of the main protagonists. Overall a well written, fascinating read that makes one wonder how much of the book could be close to the truth and how much is from the author's imagination.
Kimjongilia is a beautiful romance set up as a frame story that tells the harrowing and paranoid love between two of the inner circle members of the Kim household in North Korea. From the humble origins of communist ideology, through the ascendance of power, and all of the murder, intrigue, fear, adultery, paperwork, and backstabbing of that has led to the current situation in North Korea, this story is an exciting and heartbreaking romance heavily steeped in historical fact.

What is most memorable about this book is the way in which Fox is able to create a romance that is both a beautiful touching story and also a well-crafted tale. For me this isn’t always something that goes hand in hand, and I either find myself wading into unrealistic saccharine scenes of sentimentality or sexual explosivity. Fox has created a beautiful and realistic piece that is entertaining for any audience, from readers of the spy thriller, to bildungsroman, to romance, to historical fiction, to action, and just plain literary fiction. It is as touching as it is exciting, a nail biting novel where a true sympathetic itch for the characters drives every turn of the page.

Well written, and brilliantly edited and formatted, this book was a breeze to fly though on my . Unlike many self-published novels, this gem allowed for a gorgeous, real reading experience that is unparalleled among its peers.

I loved this book as someone who is interested in the history of the conflict and power struggles in the fearsome government, but I also loved it as a reader, and I was surprised to love this book that is considered to be a part of a genre I rarely approach. A really enjoyable book I will be recommending to others.
One of the things that I like the best about of some of the true stories that get published these days, is that you read them and think, "wow, you couldn't make this stuff up". Truth really can be stranger than fiction and never is that more true than when dealing with corrupt governments and imperial leaders. Those North Koreans are real head scratchers and are a treat to make fun of, ala "The Interview", however there are some heartbreaking stories and circumstances that come out of that country. Author Victor Fox gives us the latest with "Kimjongilia", a chilling tale to say the least.

The story of the "Supreme Leader" of North Korea, who ruled from 1948-1994 and those sent to inform on him, this is a riveting tale of espionage and betrayal. Kim Suk was a poor kitchen worker and was asked by her party to marry and inform on Kim Il-Sung, who was to be installed as the supreme leader. What she didn't know was how cruel and controlling he was and someone else was placed in the picture to protect her - Peter Chang. The two became close as they fought to both survive their circumstances and to protect each other.

This was an incredibly intriguing tale of intense conflict and survival. While a saving grace is knowing that these two were not alone, it's still heart wrenching in the knowledge that they are pretty much doomed. Very well written and opened my eyes to a page in history that I knew nothing about.
