As much a coming-of-age novel as it is murder mystery, "The Legend of Devil's Creek" functions effectively in both genres. Justin Riddley is a college junior, a new transfer to St. Jerome's College on Aubrey Island, Washington, in Puget Sound. Despite his age and education, he is rather socially inept, all the more so for being so self-aware. He's never had a relationship, is amazed that other guys seem to want his friendship, doesn't play sports, and is almost pathologically shy. But it is his self-awareness that grinds the discomfort even more intensely, because he nearly constantly bludgeons himself mentally and emotionally over what he considers his inabilities and failures.
Woven in with Justin's story is an ongoing series of murders, and not the first set on this small island, either. In 1928 and 1929, after the bullying death of a twelve-year-old, a series of grisly murders occurred. Now, eighty years and more later, a similar set takes place; the unifying thread is that all the victims are absusers of children (and often, women).
This novel contains several multifaceted characters explored in depth. Additionally, there is Justin Riddley's personal growth curve; and the ongoing murder mystery. I highly recommend this novel.

The Legend of Devil's Creek is a fast moving thriller. It starts nearly 100 years ago in a small ocean town in Washington when a boy is thrown off a bridge to his death by the school bullies. Shortly after that the 3 tormenters and the boy's step-father are murdered in a similar gruesome way, and the killer leaves broken glasses on each victim. Who is the killer? The boy's ghost or a vigilante?
Fast forward a few decades and the killings have started again. The pattern is men who have abused children and women. And the calling card broken glasses. A ghost? An old vigilante? A copycat killer? The cops are perplexed, and even more so when similar murders are discovered in other states, decades apart. The story focuses on 5 college boys, a philosophy professor, and a cop so it seems likely that one of them is going to end up being the killer. The storyline with the professor and the class was pretty boring so there had to be some reason it was in there.
The book kept me guessing. I kept changing my mind who the killer was. Well written, well developed characters, good storyline. The only thing I can fault the book on were quotation marks that kept flying off in the wrong direction. A little distracting but the writing was strong enough to overlook formatting errors. Well done!
An almost well rounded story of college students and a killer. Positives for me were the pacing, outdoor recreation descriptions, and that everyone stayed in their roles. Students didn't become detectives, they stayed students. The inclusion of Lillian was a nice touch. She brought a nice sense of humanity to the story. I really liked the Philosophy class inclusion. It gave everyone a common ground and a way to discuss their demons in a natural way.
There was way too much time spent on the college guys doing college guy things. Their antics became tedious and I found myself scanning through those parts. Of course, we needed some of it to get a sense of their characters and their inner demons, but it went on a little too long. On the other hand a few of the characters were not as developed as I liked. For example, giving me more background and insight for the policeman Marshall's character would have added greatly to the suspense I was feeling. Nose Ring Girl is another one that could have benefited from more back story. She is introduced somewhat as a minor character but her involvement builds to the point I wanted more.
The plodding pace and unclear focus of this mystery novel take a potentially interesting premise (who is mutilating all these local no-goods?) and makes it dull.
Justin, the main character, transfers colleges in an attempt to remake himself. He has always struggled to make friends and he’s hoping the move will help him with his social anxiety and awkwardness. Almost immediately he falls into a group of friends, all of whom have some sort of shadow in their past. While the bond between the group grows, a serial killer is preying on locals. The case fascinates Justin and his friends and they discuss it frequently. It’s clear that the story with Justin is the one that is closest to the author’s heart. The scenes featuring the police and their work to find the killer just feel shoehorned in, as if the author knew the reader would require more information in order to care about this series of crimes than the meandering scenes where Justin and his buddies contemplate the murders. The possibility that one of them may know more about the crimes that he (or she) is letting on is constantly dangled in front of us, but when the truth is revealed, it’s so sketchy that it isn’t satisfying. It never really gels and the connection to the past – one of the key components of the mystery – is never revealed. Alexander doesn’t succeed in combining the various parts of this story into a coherent and satisfying whole.
Taken in a different direction, as a radically different type of novel, this may have worked. In its current form, it just doesn’t.
Book was interesting but plot was all over the place, spending a lot of time on the main characters' juvenile and immature activities (some not necessarily pertinent to the story) while not explaining the many loose ends. In particular, it was never explained how the murderer was able to travel to commit some of the crimes. All in all, I applaud the author's efforts. A tightening of the plot, the deletion of extraneous details of college partying activities, and explanation to the readers of how the murders were committed would help improve the book.
