I was prepared to not like this book because I am one of those who absolutely loathes the amnesia trope. In fact, I would have given it a pass altogether except for the fact that I'd enjoyed the first two books in the series, and was willing to take the risk. But I am giving Tempting the Bride 4 stars -- would have given it only 3.5 if that were possible -- because the writing was such that I actually read it through to the end and enjoyed it! In hindsight I have other complaints (didn't much care for the totally self-indulgent heroine, for example) but it wasn't hard to overlook things in order to get to the HEA, because it is written skillfully enough to keep one interested. I love the idea of a relationship "do-over" and this one worked despite the amnesia ploy used to give the H/h the opportunity to really find each other. The dialogue was sort of fun and the development of the Hero's character is great. Not so with the heroine whose character doesn't really seem to change except when she is still under the effect of the amnesia (does amnesia cause change of character?) That said, the Hero's feelings for the heroine are well laid out and carry the story along. It's not the best book you'll ever read, but again Sherry Thomas's writing is good enough to carry you through stuff you don't particularly like and leave you feeling like the time wasn't wasted and that you've been for a pleasant ride. Can't wait for her next book!

I will never be able to give Sherry Thomas less than 4 stars. I almost gave this a 3, but then I realized after I read Hidden Blade and My Beautiful Enemy I was rating this book by the standard set by Sherry Thomas and not by the typical historical romance. In all her books her depiction of the characters are well written, her dialogues are spot on, and the emotional development of the story is delightful.
Short Review Delightful book from beginning to end. Funny, smart, fast paced, and endearing. I haven't read the two previous books in the trilogy, but will do so now. The author wrote the book in such a way that my not reading the other two books did not hinder my ability to follow the supporting characters and the story. I haven't read books from the romantic fiction genre in a long while, and this was a great way to get my feet wet again. Loved it.
As I read "Beguiling the Beauty" and "Ravishing the Heiress" I fell in love with David Hillsborough, Lord Hastings. I eagerly awaited the release of "Tempting the Bride" knowing that it would be well-written, full of quips and bon mots, but I truly had no idea how lyrical this book would be. Sherry Thomas hits a grand slam with this book. For those who don't like Hastings, I can only wonder if those ladies had ever been the object of a schoolboy's puppy love. Fifth grade, anyone? How well I remember the ribald comments, the hair pulling, the incessant efforts to get my attention, all to no avail. And Sherry Thomas shows us in exquisite detail how two people who seem to abhor and revile each other, have hidden secrets, unplumbed depths, and shared memories (do they ever!). My favorite part of the book, perhaps the most revealing of the heroine's Machiavellian thinking was the "test" Helena devised for Hastings and her adolescent love interest, Andrew Martin. Hastings passed with flying colors, while Martin failed miserably, requiring a hefty nudge from Helena before doing the right thing. The intimate scenes were breathtaking, like Hastings' murals. In "Tempting the Bride," Sherry Thomas hits the high notes with technical precision and artistic flair. Employing several hackneyed cliched plot devices - hero loves Best Friend's younger sister, hero has illegitimate daughter, amnesia, love triangle - so familiar to second-rate romance writers, first-rate novelist Sherry Thomas takes well water and turns it into sparkling champagne. I loved this book, read it in one sitting, and have placed it lovingly on my keeper shelf.

This historical romance is third book in Thomas' Fitzhugh Trilogy (I loved all three). By this point, we know the two protagonists, Helena Fitzhugh and Viscount Hastings (David), pretty well. Helena is in love with a married man who refused to marry her for fear of angering his mother. David is in love with Helena and has been for many years, something Helena does not realize. Helena has been carrying on with this married man and David, worried about her reputation, has been keeping a close eye on her, even as watching her fawn over someone else breaks his heart. Oh, and Helena hates David.

David's response to Helena's disdain? Constant tormenting. As Thomas writes, "More than even her scorn he feared her apathy--the opposite of love was not hate, but indifference to exist in such proximity to her, yet make no impression upon her awareness, upon her soul."

Then a close relative of the wife of the man with whom Helena is having an affair sets a trap to catch Helena and her love in delicto flagrante. David learns of the setup and rushes to protect Helena. And so they are caught together. On their way to elope, though, they are in a terrible carriage accident which seriously injuries Helena. She is unconscious for a while, during which time David hovers over her sick bed.

She eventually wakes up BUT (isn't there always one?) she has amnesia. The oldest cliche in the world of soap opera in the hands of Thomas becomes a beautiful story of discovery between a man deeply in love and the woman whom he has always wanted. They begin almost anew, their animosity suddenly thrown out. They have told her that David is her husband (thinking that would be easier to say than to explain the complicated situation in which they found themselves before the accident). Helena re-learns David and their relationship is strong.

And yet, their journey is not an easy one as Helena slowly regains parts of her memory. It all comes to a head when she suddenly remembers the way she used to feel about David and that she used to love a married man. But she does not forget the weeks after waking following the accident. It all mixes together and Helena must figure out how to make sense of it all. I will not ruin how this plays out but it was not what I expected in the best possible way.
