Chosen is an urban fantasy book by Denise Grover Swank. I had previously read one of Denise's other books and I enjoyed her writing so I decided to give this book a try even though I have not really read many urban fantasy books. I really enjoyed reading this book and the story is interesting to me. Even though I do not usually read fantasy or paranormal type books, I do like the premise of this one and I like the connection between Emma and Will. It is nice to escape reality when reading books and this is definitely a book that creates excitement and provides plenty of suspense as well. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series and to seeing what will happen with Emma and Will.Tags : Chosen [Denise Grover Swank] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This book started off well and I had high hopes for it. But then it turned into a constant chase scene that wasn't terribly well written. However, it was better written than the supposed "We're falling in love but don't want to admit it" scenes. I started skimming at somewhere between 40-50% and once I skimmed to 70% I gave up. How more than one book got milked out of this train wreck I don't know.
***SPOILER ALERT***I’m really not into science fiction type books, but this series was a definite exception to my rule. This was a thrilling read that I couldn’t put down since I started reading it, can’t wait to see what else happens in the series! I highly recommend to people who like sci-fi, but also to those who don’t because Denis Grover Swank does a great job of making you think this could really be happening and we just don’t know it. This was the first book of the series and is recommended to be read first, but I’ve also read “Emergence” and I think it would be OK to read that one first.
It starts out with a mother, Emma, on the run with her son, Jake. These bad men that Jake can actually see coming are after them. Along with these “bad men” is another organization hunting Emma, and they sent Will. Will is a mercenary who is hired to bring Emma in alive. He’s unaware of these “bad men” who are trying to kill Emma and take Jake. He pairs with Emma along with Jake’s help to get Emma to these people that want her. But along the way, he undergoes a paranormal experience with Jake and he is marked as the chosen one and given a specific prophecy. Now he feels a strong and protective need to keep Emma safe from all of these people. Along their journey, Jake is taken by the “bad men”, and Emma learns she has supernatural powers as well. Will and Emma also get intimate, leading to her becoming pregnant with the next child, which seems to fit in with the prophecy that Will heard from Jake. As Will and Emma are escaping, Emma is shot and becomes in critical condition. Will is forced to hand her over to his people because they want her alive. He ends up being black mailed by a future presidential candidate and is forced to become part of his secret service while Emma stays and recuperates with the candidates son, Alex. As Will is leaving, he also learns he has supernatural powers and communicates with Emma in his head. Alex turns out to be the person that raped her, causing her to become pregnant with Jake. Will takes the candidate hostage to get Emma away. This book ends with Emma and Will on the run from 2 groups – one to help keep Emma alive until she has her second child – but now wants Will dead, and the other who wants Emma dead.
To begin with let me just say how much I loved the fierce artwork on this eBook cover. It really captured my attention. The book blurb did a good job of catching my attention too.
The story proved to be intense. Not just a little bit intense but high level intense. Emma's love for her son is so strongly felt that you just know she will do whatever she has to in order to protect him. And then she does.
Will is a very much unknown quantity at first when he shows up in her life. And she sure wishes that Jake would stop saying that they needed him. She doesn't trust him and inch and tries many times to just ditch him. But then Jake takes up that same refrain that "they needed him."
Will is the first to say he wasn't a good man and owns up to fact that he's done bad things. However when Jake looks deep into him he sees that Will can be trusted and IS a good man.
This is often a pretty emotional story and not just from trying to escape from what Jake calls, "the bad men." There seems to be plenty of those and they are ruthless, clever and relentless. There is also some mystical stuff going on.
There isn't what I would call a H.E.A. in this book but there is a kind of a relief for the moment for Book #1. Yes, this is a series so there are a lot of unanswered questions and more troubles to sort out. All heading to what I hope is a H.E.A. It does look promising from some of the other reviews that I have read about Book #4.
The first two thirds of this book consists of Emma, Jake her 5 year old son and Will being chased by numerous "bad men" in black SUVs without any explanation except they want to get Jake. Emma has been on the run for the last three years and now the "bad men" are getting closer to catching them. William Davenport, a complete stranger to them, offers to help and upon Jake's insistence Emma accepts. Jake can predict the future, but for a 5 year old he keeps a lot of his information to himself. The "romance" in this story is the biggest disappointment as it takes the form of instant attraction where Emma and Will are having sex by the fourth day as they are being chased and shot at. I guess that's what being the Chosen One does to a person. Some answers are given by the end of the book and the existence of a prophecy is revealed. No cliff hangers, but the story continues. I'm still making up my mind about this series, but gave it 4 stars because I am reading the next book. I do like the prequel at the end that shows how the running began when Jake was two years old.
