“Would you like to come round to my room after dinner?” he suggested. “I can show you some of my recent purchases – I was in a gallery in Bond Street this morning and picked up some very appealing portraits.”
“You make it sound almost like one of those Victorian melodramas, where you’re inviting me upstairs to see your etchings,” I smiled. I hoped he’d appreciate my sense of humour.
He laughed. “I like your wit,” he said. “I must explain I said ‘room’ rather than ‘home’ just now, because I’m presently living out of a hotel room. My company pays the hotel bill, and it works better that way for tax purposes.”
I looked across at Sheryl sitting alone at the table in the corner. When Roger wasn’t looking, she grinned and gave me a thumbs-up.
I found him to be easy company; we both appreciated art and music, and I soon reached the conclusion that he was the kind of guy I’d be happy to live with for the rest of my life. But dreams like that never happen.
When we’d finished, he paid the waiter and we left the bistro. “The hotel’s not far from here.”
He was right; the hotel was on the opposite side of Piccadilly. It was the Ritz. What kind of guy had I just had dinner with? When I walked into his room, I was overwhelmed by the plush interior. But it wasn’t a room; it was a whole suite.
“I’m looking for a permanent home in London, but I’m picky. And in no hurry, either,” he said as he gestured me to sit down on the sofa. He offered me a glass of wine and sat beside me. I could tell what was going to happen, and got my mind together to prepare for it. Sure, I was engaged. But, like Sheryl said, why not sample what was available in the rest of the world before I finally commit myself?
As soon as I drained the glass, I smiled at him. “Ready for another?”
I nodded. I’d already had two or three glasses during dinner, but this was quite superior. And I knew a little about wine.
“Before we have another glass, there’s something I’d like you to do for me. Stand up and strip.”
“You want me to strip? Here?”
“Sure. I want to see what’s beneath your dress. Or you can leave right now, if that’s what you want. But, if you’re the adventurous kind of girl – and I believe you are – you’ll want to stay. Otherwise you’ll spend the rest of your life wondering what you missed tonight. I could give you so much pleasure – pleasure that you’ve never experienced before with another man – and you’ll be glad that you remained here for the night.”
