Could not finish the book in it's entirety. It's hard for me to care for characters in a story if the characters aren't even likeable. Though there weren't that many characters in this story the majority of them were in my opinion not very likeable. To say the main two were almost dysfunctional would be putting it mildly. If this were real life instead of a story I feel quite sure that any of the kids in the story would be taken permanently from the parents custody. I think the auther was going for a "quirky" storyline and instead got just a plain unbelievably stupid one. This book was offered free on the daily book email I get and I am thankful I didn't waste money on the purchase. Others may think it a great story, which is fine. Personally it wasn't worth my time to finish it.

Almost Perfect McCloud Brothers Patricia Rice 9780449006030 Books Reviews

This was a good story that dealt with some difficult situations. I loved Jared but got very tired of Chloe and how negative she was. That attitude drug on way too long and was frankly, disheartening. I like (for the most part) the writers style though so I will try another one.
This is a great story. Cleo and Jared are very different. She is very blunt and definitely doesn’t like to socialize. He was a playboy, but that no longer interests him. Being around Cleo and the teens helps him grow and learn what he wants from life. He helps Cleo learn to love again and take chances. They are great together.
I really liked the storyline and how drawn I was into the main characters lives. This dealt with some difficult subjects. The only thing was that I didn’t care for was the intimate scenes. Too explicit for my taste.
Cleo Alyssum is a heroine who is possibly the least heroic character you could imagine. At least, so it seems.
Cleo is a reclusive recovering addict who is struggling to rebuild her life so she can regain custody of her son. She has zero interest in men, little interest in most people at all, and really just wants to be left alone to renovate her isolated house on the South Carolina coast.

Jared McCloud, who is a down-on-his-luck cartoonist with a history of residing in shallow emotional waters and running when the water starts to get too deep. At first he just wants to rent Cleo's beach house. Then he really wants Cleo too, who wants absolutely nothing to do with him. General conflict and mayhem ensue, including a hurricane.

There are many funny scenes and moments, but this novel deals with some major issues, and for the most part handles them sensitively and honestly. Cleo is a fascinating character of great depth, and Jared surpassed my expectations by turning into a man worthy of her trust. I found the emotional journey these two too, along with the two abused/neglected teenagers they take under their wings to be touching and real.

I love reading about characters who pull themselves out of really bad situations and thrive in their new lives. It's even sweeter when they can find true love
4 STARS

Carolina/McCloud Brothers BOOK 1

Almost Perfect brings Cleo Alyssum from Impossible Dreams back and tells her story.
Cleo has moved to a Island she bought a hardware store and is fixing up houses. She wants
to be left alone. On her road she has warning signs then flying witch, a tape of police sirens, dogs barking. Other items that keep people away.

Jared liked the signs and other things. He wants to rent her beach house but Cleo does not want company near her. So she leaves and Jared follows in his fancy car. All of a sudden Jared feels something on his foot he sees a black snake and the snake starts to crawl up his pant leg. Jared loose control of his car and flips.

Cleo learns that he crashed and was out. He had no ID on him or the car. Cleo also learns that her neighbor teen put a snake in his car. Cleo feels paniced and wants to protect Gene so agrees to rent her beach house to Jared.

Cleo is trying to get custody of her son Matey. She has befriended two teenagers that mom has substance abuse. She does not want to turn the kids into social services because she was in the kids life and grew up in system and had bad experiences thier too.

I liked Almost Perfect and bought it on and bought the next book in
Cleo is on parole, trying to stay on the “straight & narrow” so she can get her son back from social services. Jared is from a rich, entitled family who prefers to avoid working on his overdue cartoon strip and screen play. He stampedes into her life at the worst possible time. They both have demons, although Cleo’s are more visceral, and their concern for two children of a druggie mother whose neglect borders on criminal lead them to question their beliefs in what is right versus what is needed. This is in no way a light-hearted beach read, and Ms. Rice’s treatment in bringing it all together is brilliant.
What a outsyanding book. It was very emotional times, because of the subject matter, but at the same time it wasn't all doom and gloom, either. One minute I was crying my eyes out, and the next minute I was laughing so hard. Cleo's little ploys of keeping strangers off her property was hilarious, as were her menagerie of unusual pets. I found the emotional journey these two too, along with the two abused/neglected teenagers they take under their wings to be touching and real. I jumped for joy when Jared finally stepped in to help.

I'm not going to lie, though....at times Cleo's negativity wore on me, but then if I had to endure the life she'd had, I'd probably be feeling the same way. I fell in love with Jared right away, especially when he didn't let anything Cleo said or did, run him off like she'd wanted him to. It takes one heck of a man, to stick around with all the horrible things that were going on. Most men would have run off without ever looking back, but not Jared.

This was a very long story, but one you'll not want to miss.
Could not finish the book in it's entirety. It's hard for me to care for characters in a story if the characters aren't even likeable. Though there weren't that many characters in this story the majority of them were in my opinion not very likeable. To say the main two were almost dysfunctional would be putting it mildly.
