This is a classic of both storytelling and literary writing - so rare to find the two in one book.
Reading it, one is transported back in time to a Dublin during the recession prior to this one, when the city may indeed have looked tawdry but had a genuine, beating heart.
A Jewish journalist is murdered and a previously unknown anti-Semitic group claims responsibility. Garda detective Matt Minogue investigates and comes to realise that the claim is merely a cover for something entirely more sinister for the Irish establishment to face. In the background of the investigation, any time Minogue is at the Jewish family's home there are messages of support and sympathy flooding in from religious leaders all across the island.
As a result of reading this book I visited the Irish Jewish Museum in Dublin and met the curator described in the book, now sadly deceased.
Brady lives in Canada now but continues to visit Ireland and to write, updating his views of the country and of its policing.
