I started reading Philippa Carr's books back in the 70's and had the entire collection. I found out that she also wrote under Victoria Holt and Jeanne Plaidy so I bought all of those books and read them all as well. I love her writing because she's easy to follow and even though there are some hints of sex or violence, it's so small. These books contain everything I love. Love, heartbreak, and always a good mystery. It's not until I come to almost the end of the book that the mystery is solved. I also loved the fact that she puts a lot of historical facts in hers books, especially when she writes under Jean Plaidy and the Royals. I love England and her books are just perfect for me. She's so good at describing things that I feel like I'm there.Tags : Lion Triumphant [Philippa Carr] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Catherine and Carey had grown up together. Bravery comes in so many ways. Men and women in the face of danger react in different strengths I so loved this book and their characters. Love and hate so intricately woven.
A swashbuckling seafaring romance during the time of Elizabeth1 when England was renowned for her Navy and taking on the might of the Spanish Armada.
This is a very dated romance now and the hero Jake Pennylon left a lot to be desired in his actions and justifications for his pursuit of women and sons. No way could this be considered a PC romance. His long suffering wife Catherine certainly wasn't a pushover by any means and managed to hold her own.
Still it was an engaging romance with some excellent historical detail and a list of characters that were interesting.
Wonderful story about early sailors of England and Spain during the time of Elizabeth the first. A women who gets entangled with two men who are rivals and learns to love both. A lot of history in this book which I find fascinating. I enjoyed a great relaxing read.
I love historical romances, a nice way to learn something about history if it is accurately written. I do not know wether it is because this book has been written some time ago, or because it is a ebook, but the writing style is deplorable. What could have been a great story has been turned into a simplified version about a girl taken against her will twice, in a love and hate relationship with both her husbands. History is lined very thinly, and 85% of the story is about a girl and later woman who does not know to make up her mind. Big disappointment.
The "Daughters of England" series by Philippa Carr (who I understand is the same person as Victoria Holt) is a personal favorite. It tracks the lives of all the women in a family in England down through the generations, with a healthy dose of both romance and history. The Lion Triumphant is one of my favorites in the entire series. I wholeheartedly recommend the entire series for both romance fans and those who love history.
Arrived timely in good (ex-library) condition. This is the second in 20 books starting with Miracle at St Brunos. I read Miracle half dozen times, but this seemed repetitive and outdated. Perhaps I just grew out of Victoria Holt/Phillipa Carr? Not sure I'll continuing buying the last 18.
Read this book when it first came out over 30 years ago. As is typical with historical storylines, there is some boredom as you read fill in info meant to make you familiar with what was going on. Overall the story is very good, well told, and is one of several as the author continued with each generation of daughter's in successive books. Definitely more than an evening's read, but with enough going on to keep you interested and in the end, the lead female realizes the lead male, whom she has fought for years, is actually her true soul mate, something he always knew.
