In the tradition of Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Ring Around the Rosy is the story of a few survivors after the sun breaks through the Earth's atmosphere and cooks the planet. Among them are seven young people, including a girl in a wheelchair and a boy with Down Syndrome, who meet in the ruins of a school in their hometown of Marion, Massachusetts. When one discovers a still-working portable radio in basement ruins, they scan through the dial and discover a single radio station still on the air. With this message "Please come to Rockport". Thus begins an adventure across the state, in search for the one parent who may be alive, and aided by stragglers they pick up along the way. It's a journey that provides its travelers a chance to change, and find faith and hope. Maybe even a miracle. A dystopian tale, filled with whimsy.

Ring Around the Rosy WB Cushman 9780998547503 Books

When I saw that this book takes place in an area where I spent my childhood, I thought it might be fun to read a story with familiar settings. And it was....I even recognized some of the characters as representative of actual people in the town i.e. Marty Kobrin:-). And as I began reading, I thought to myself-Oh-a story for young adults. But I was wrong.....it's so much more than that. It's an adult book with adult themes that uses children as the main characters. The book forces you to think beyond the storyline. What about the environment? Could this really happen and if so, what can I do to prevent it? It makes you confront our stereotypes of people with disabilities and their limitations-oh wait-do they REALLY have any?But most of all, it's a message full of HOPE. It shows the resiliency of the human spirit, and offers us the idea that if we never give up and if we never stop believing, can "miracles" truly happen for each and every one of us? It's a great read!

Ring Around the Rosy WB Cushman 9780998547503 Books Reviews

Great read, I love how they all came together and helped each other, each with their own talent and input, and finding each other exactly when needed. My two favorite characters are Teddy and Rosy.
Wonderful tale, well told. Seems unassuming in the beginning, but the plots grow and pull you in. Great characters you can't help but become attached to. Very interesting premise and different settings not often used in today's fiction. Good read.
I just finished reading the book over the weekend and I truly enjoyed the story! As someone who has worked with adolescents my whole career, I was especially impressed with the characters created by the author and for the story they got to tell. I enjoyed knowing the landscape as a Massachusetts resident and could easily imagine the trek from the cape to Rockport. Great story and terrific characters! I look forward to more from Mr. Cushman and hopefully to hear from some of the characters again.
This clearly was a no brainer when I started to read this book. I felt like the characters were well written and developed by the end of the novel. The plot kept me interested until the very end, I'm happy to have read and review this novel. I think others will enjoy it too!
This sci-fi march begs the question is it a miracle or whimsy? A hint book one ends with the odds against them but smiles on their faces. This "wicked" good story keeps the promise of an engaging quest that grabs the reader's interest from beginning to end. The reader will have a hard time putting this book down and will certainly want to know what happens to this diverse band, you will hope that that they will "live long and prosper"
Do they deserve 2nd chances? You decide that...was it a miracle..."duh"
I smell a sequel and am "looking forward to see what happens next... Matt and Rosy will "figure it out"
I had to process this book after reading before writing a review. It took a while to get into, but, got easier and more interesting.Im glad I stuck with it.
The characters were strong, interesting and not the usual heroes.Everyone needs characters they can identify with..I think it's a great teenage book, but as much as I curse in my daily life,I don't enjoy seeing it in print(hypocrite). It was very wordy, and sentences were too long for me to read.
I would have really enjoyed an audio version.
What I liked about the Book
I like reading books set in places I know. I really enjoyed all the familiar locations. In particular, I like the route the characters choose to take on their journey. They deliberately chose a longer, less direct route, because it is near the water. There is a description of what the water means to them. Having lived near rivers and an ocean all my life, this really rang true for me. There is a real love for the sea that is bred into people living on coasts and it is well expressed here. The characters are on a journey in this book, in all senses, and I like that.
I loved the story of Marvin. I found this beautifully written and the most moving part of the book. It is at that point when I really became caught up in the story. The author shows us Marvin from Marvin’s child-eyed perspective and it is well done. He is the most moving character, for me. (I did think Matt was the best developed character and I liked him a lot.) In general, though, the characters are interesting and likeable. I started to care about what would happen to them.
Don’t want to give away any plot, but I liked all the story connected to the tube. I have never been into sci-fi, but I thought this part was plausible and well done. The premise of this book, with The Event, seemed realistic, especially in today’s world.
After a slow start, the plot moved along well and kept my interest, more than I had expected. I did enjoy the book and I recommend it.

What I didn’t like about the book
I thought a lot of it was too wordy. I like more economy of language; I prefer Hemingway to James Joyce or Kurt Vonnegut. But that is a personal choice. Still, I think the book would be improved with fewer adjectives and shorter sentences. The author would have benefitted from a good editor. But this is his first novel and I imagine plot and language will tighten up in his subsequent works.
I thought the book got off to a slow start. It was hard to get into at first. The first volume seems weaker than the subsequent ones. Again, first novel stuff.
The ending was a little too storybook for me; too neat, too much happily ever after. The kids had solved all their first-world problems and met all their goals. I thought it was a little too easy. I guess I would have preferred more Dickensian reality.
All in all, this was a good read and I enjoyed the book. I recommend it!
